The Architect

For Eileen Gray, the relationship between people, architecture and space was closely intertwined. She designed her buildings as a living system of permeable and expandable spaces, in which the built environment and the landscape merge seamlessly.

Gray built only a few houses; nevertheless, her first work is considered an icon of modern architecture: E.1027. Like her second house, Tempe à Pailla, it interacts with the landscape of the Côte d’Azur. Based on the conditions of sun and wind, Gray determined the flow of light and ventilation.

Flexible floor plans, furniture that can be used as room dividers, and folding windows transform the space into a living organism. A social area can easily be converted into a retreat, and the living room into a studio.

In the fluid connection between interior space and landscape, a special quality unfolds in which movement, views, spatial proximity and scenic distance become an enrichment of the human experience.
