The mpk: Change as Tradition
Since its establishment in December 1874 as a museum of applied arts, the Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern has undergone numerous transformations, reflected not least in its architecture. Historical photographs of the exterior and interior vividly illustrate the construction, destruction and reconstruction of the building, offering a variety of insights into the façade design around 1880, the historical interior design, the war damage in 1944, the period of reconstruction after 1945, and the renovation work carried out up to the present day.
Seemingly casually arranged wooden panels serve as projection surfaces for these images, highlighting the museum’s continual transformation, which is most recently visible in the renovations marking its 150(th) anniversary.
A printed newspaper invites visitors to take a closer look at the archival material.
This presentation forms part of Sahana Doravani’s master’s thesis, completed under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Adria Daraban at the Chair of Architecture – Theory – History and Prof. Dirk Bayer at the Chair Methodologies of Design at the RPTU University Kaiserslautern-Landau.
