White is not the same as white
White is the color of the picture background, for example in watercolor painting. It is used by painters to “highlight”, i.e. to emphasize the light in a painting, and it is used to lighten a color when mixing.
It was not until the art of the 20th century that white acquired an autonomous meaning as a non-color, just like the chromatic colors. Color no longer depicts reality, but stands for itself. White is associated with light and brightness, as it has a high reflective power.
Not all white is the same, as the works in this room show: light has a decisive influence on the effect of the works and evokes a multitude of shades and tones.
