The mpk since 1980

The further expansion of the collection of non-representational art characterizes the tenure of Gisela Fiedler-Bender, who becomes mpk director in 1980. Through the return of the arts and crafts on loan to Speyer, the founding collection is also given a new standing.

Britta E. Buhlmann, Director from 1993 to 2022, additionally develops the mpk into a place for “Concrete Art” (an art movement that follows mathematical-geometric principles). A focus on American positions and female artists is also a important factor during her tenure. One example is the purchase of “Wednesday” by the American-Cuban painter Carmen Herrera in 2012-perhaps the most important acquisition in the recent history of the mpk.

Since 1994, the Prints and Drawings Collection has grown significantly thanks to the commitment of the Marianne and Heinrich Lenhardt Foundation.

In recent Times, the mpk has been working on establishing a new collection focus on photography and lens-based art.
