How do you see yourself?

Humans have probably never portrayed themselves more often and in more diverse ways than they do in social media today. For a long time, this form of self-portrayal was not even possible – only artists had the skills to paint themselves.

Over the centuries, portraits in art have therefore primarily been observer images: Images that others make of people. Notwithstanding, they reflect personality, emotions and the spirit of the times. The works exhibited here impressively demonstrate the changing fashions and forms of representation. Sometimes the focus is on the most realistic portrayal, sometimes it was about alienation. Sometimes those portrayed appear natural, sometimes they stage themselves.
