Memorial: Rudolf Levy and Otto Freundlich
This room is dedicated to the artists Rudolf Levy (1875-1944) and Otto Freundlich (1878-1943), who lost their lives in the Shoah, the mass murder of the Jewish population carried out by the National Socialists (Nazionalsozialisten) in concentration camps. Their fates are representative of the approximately six million Jews who were murdered by the Nazi regime (1933-1945). The self-portrait of Rudolf Levy shown here stands in dialog with Edmund de Waal’s work “spur”, which the British ceramic artist dedicated especially to Levy’s memory. Otto Freundlich is referenced in an object by Martin Noël, who has dealt intensively with Freundlich’s abstract painterly work in a cycle of works.
