Painting Collection
approx. 900 paintings
The painting collection comprises around 900 paintings. An exquisite selection of outstanding exhibits are on permanent display, inviting visitors to experience a wide variety of art. One focus is on the art of the 19th century. Remarkable, then contemporary works by Anselm Feuerbach, Carl Spitzweg and Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, among others, were added to the collection in 1903 through a donation by Joseph Benzino, a Munich court councillor from Landstuhl, and mark the beginning of the painting collection. Significant examples of German Impressionism, Expressionism, art after 1945 and diverse positions of the 21st century set further accents. American art of the 20th and 21st centuries has a firm place in the conceptual work of the museum. Today, the mpk’s collecting activities focus on international contemporary art.
