Art in transition

Shortly before the beginning of the First World War, Franz Marc created the woodcut ‘The Story of Creation II’. Using bold shades of green, yellow and black, the artist opened up a dynamic pictorial space that at first glance appears abstract. But then one can recognise animal heads and plants, made visible in the areas of colour by fine lines. Everything seems to be in motion.

This print is a masterpiece of Expressionism and represents an art movement around 1910 that surprised, irritated and emotionally appealed to people in a new way around 1910. In a time of great social change, many artists were searching for a new attitude towards life. In Expressionist art, this attitude towards life became visualised.

But what was modern about Expressionist art? This question is the focus of the exhibition ‘Outrageously Expressive!’.
